{"id":1115,"date":"2023-10-03T14:58:06","date_gmt":"2023-10-03T14:58:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wrightexperience.com\/?page_id=1115"},"modified":"2023-10-03T17:03:00","modified_gmt":"2023-10-03T17:03:00","slug":"artifacts","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.wrightexperience.com\/artifacts\/","title":{"rendered":"Artifacts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Artifacts in Use by The Wright Experience<\/strong><br>The following are some of the many Wright artifacts we have studied in depth from a variety of collections, including the Wright Experience, the Wright Family, the Dayton Engineer\u2019s Club, and&nbsp;the National Park Service.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-b1c92c24 gb-tabs\" data-opened-tab=\"1\">\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-12042a6e gb-tabs__buttons\">\n\n<button class=\"gb-button gb-button-54691fee gb-button-text gb-tabs__button gb-block-is-current\"><strong>Engines<\/strong><\/button>\n\n\n\n<button class=\"gb-button gb-button-7b01c68a gb-button-text gb-tabs__button\"><strong>Controls<\/strong><\/button>\n\n\n\n<button class=\"gb-button gb-button-0d647fcf gb-button-text gb-tabs__button\"><strong>Propeller<\/strong><\/button>\n\n\n\n<button class=\"gb-button gb-button-0f8a3f61 gb-button-text gb-tabs__button\"><strong>Fabric<\/strong><\/button>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-ab74e478 gb-tabs__items\">\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-92a64a0b gb-tabs__item gb-tabs__item-open\">\n\n<p><strong>1901 Vertical Four Engine, Serial #20<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wrightexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1910-Vertical-Four-Engine-Serial-20.jpg\" alt=\"1910 Vertical Four Engine - Serial 20\" class=\"wp-image-576\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This engine is the only operating original Wright engine in the world. It was collected in 1999 and restored by Greg Cone of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightexperience.com\/\">Wright Experience<\/a>. Other than minor parts like nuts, bolts, and spark plugs, all its parts are original. Owned by the Wright Experience, it has been tested in a dynamometer in the Delphi Automotive Labs in Rochester, NY, and produces about 35 horsepower. Engines of this kind were used in many Wright aircraft, including the 1908 Model A, the 1909 Military Flyer, and the 1911 Model B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1903 Engine No.3<\/strong><br>This engine, in the collection of the Dayton Engineers\u2019 Club of Dayton, Ohio, has been loaned to the Wright Experience for study and conservation treatment. This engine was used by the Wrights as testing device and led to the development of the Vertical Four engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightexperience.com\/the-engine\/\">Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-f337f349 gb-tabs__item\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wrightexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Burgess-Wright-F19-Parts.jpg\" alt=\"Burgess Wright F19 Parts\" class=\"wp-image-575\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Burgess Wright F-19 Parts<\/strong><br>These parts, salvaged from Burgess-Wright aircraft F-19, are in the collection of the Wright Experience. The aircraft was a Wright Model \u201cB\u201d built under license. These parts guided our reproduction of the Model \u201cB\u201d and include controls, chains, chain guides, propeller shafts, and sprockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightexperience.com\/the-controls\/\">Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-d32ab22b gb-tabs__item\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wrightexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/1903-and-1904-Propellers.jpg\" alt=\"1903 and 1904 Propellers\" class=\"wp-image-580\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>1903 and 1904 Propellers<\/strong><br>These propellers were invaluable in the building of our reproduction 1903 and 1904 propellers. The 1904 Propeller, in the Wright Family collection, was loaned to us by Marianne Miller Hudec. The 1903 Propeller is in the collection of the National Park Service, which generously allowed us to make measurements and thorough inspections of the fragment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Model K Propeller<\/strong><br>This propeller is currently on loan from the collection of Stephen Wright. It was given to Stephen\u2019s father, Wilkinson \u201cWick\u201d Wright, by Orville Wright. When Wick was a teenager, he asked his Uncle Orville for a keepsake from the laboratory. Orville gave him this propeller and told him that it came from a \u201cfloat plane\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The propeller is of similar design to the \u201cbig screws\u201d used as early as 1909. While the overall dimensions of a nine-foot diameter by twelve-inch blade width are similar to the 1909 \u201cbent end\u201d propellers, the thickness is much greater and the hub area is larger and round instead of rectangular.&nbsp; The round hub suggests mounting in a \u201ctractor\u201d position instead of \u201cpusher\u201d, meaning it was mounted in the front of the aircraft.&nbsp; This propeller was most likely used on the Wright Model K produced in 1916 for the U.S Navy.&nbsp; This craft was a seaplane with twin tractor propellers, nine feet in diameter of the \u201cbent end\u201d type.&nbsp; The Model K was the last Wright machine to use \u201cbend end\u201d propellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This propeller will be tested at the ODU\/Langley Full Scale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightexperience.com\/the-wind-tunnel\/\">Wind tunnel<\/a> as part of the Wright Experience propeller testing program.&nbsp;We are interested in hearing from anyone with additional information about this propeller or about the Model K.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightexperience.com\/the-propeller\/\">Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-a7c3c87a gb-tabs__item\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wrightexperience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Sewing-the-Fabric1.jpg\" alt=\"Sewing the Fabric\" class=\"wp-image-1445\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>1903 Flyer Fabric<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fabric, from the collection of Marianne Miller Hudec, is a large section of the lower right wing panel of the 1903 Flyer. It was part of a larger piece of the fabric divided among Orville Wright\u2019s heirs following his death.
